$cientist Essentials: Boss Lab $tyle™ 1.0
“Your outfit and accessories should never take away from your research presentation or your confidence.”
- Dr. K
So, you wanna be a Boss? We get it.... You have the $kills and personality, but need a little assistance with the oft overlooked details. Being a professional with versatile functions requires leaving the lab and heading off to meetings or events. However, we don't always show up to our days in lab looking put together. In this Boss Lab $tyle 1.0, we'll breakdown the essential elements that will carry anyone on the road to being a boss. Think interviews, conferences, seminars, networking socials, and business dinners. Start off with a great bag, add some go-to's, and you are set.
1. Bag
This is one of the most essential accessories that you will need throughout your career. The right one will hold all the necessities and look professional. Choose one that is structured, not too large or heavy, and neutral in color. Also, a bag that has both top handles and a removable/adjustable strap is perfect for versatile and comfortable wear.
*Although this eventually should be a real investment piece that will last forever, don't worry about dropping a ton of cash on one while you are starting out. Decent alternatives are on the market to stave you off until you build up that bank account.

2. Communiqué
Being prepared is key. This means having the proper tools to take notes and letting colleagues know that you have arrived. During interviews, meetings, and networking functions jot down significant details and keep in touch with industry professionals.
a. Writing Pad: This shows you mean business because you are attentive to details being shared at your appointment.
b. Pen: Never be caught without one. Find one that is elegant and easy to handle without leaking ink everywhere.
c. Cards: Show them who you are. Build your network and brand by handing these out at important events and meetings.

3. Beauty
Carry the basics for touch-ups throughout the day and change-ups for after lab hours. Overall, keeping your look easy to maintain with go-to colors and formulas are your best bet.
a. Lips: Keep one for day and a second to switch over to After Hours Lab $tyle™. A neutral beige for day keeps it professional and a red-orange for evening makes it pop. Both formulas should keep lips moisturized without smudging because that can leave a very unflattering ring-around-the-lips. I often throw a lip balm in just in case.
Shown Above: Tom Ford Lip Color in Blush Nude ($53) and Chanel Rouge Allure Intense Long-Wear Lip Colour in Coromandel ($37)
b. Eyes: Looking overdone during the day is usually not the way to go, so opt for a neutral palette that highlights and flatters your sight-bestowing organ.
Eyeshadow: A neutral eyeshadow quad that can take you from day to night is indispensable, so definitely carry it with you for touch ups and to add a little more color for evening. Remember to leave the sparkly options for after hours.
Mascara: Carry this to add some definition and keep from looking tired on those long lab days. A bit at the base of your top lashes can really perk up your eyes when you add it before a presentation or head out of the lab for some fun.

c. Tips: Between pipetting and writing grants 24/7, can a scientist really keep up their nails like a pro? Start off with a lacquer that is long-lasting, but in a hue that doesn't scream "no time for a manicure" when nails get dinged. A nail polish in neutral beige allows touch ups of any chips that arise.

Bottom Line
Have a great time at your next talk and don’t forget to keep it fashionable at your personal and economical comfort level. Your outfit and accessories should never take away from your research presentation or your confidence. Happy STEMming!

Your personal energy, and style, starts at the gut-brain axis. This New York Fashion Week (NYFW), The Magazine celebrates personal style with sustainable luxury fashion. Creator of the Dosha Dressing method, Aarti Kuver, PhD, curated an edit for Fall NYFW to coincide with her exclusive styling sessions. Like a wellness supplement, this method focuses on balance and prevention.
Where’s the courage to show yourself? Let’s find the audacity to not wear Sambas with Happier in hand. Choosing the right foods to compliment your Dosha Dressing OOTD can reduce specific aversions. Vata can be less fearful, Pitta less angry, and Kapha less lazy. With the right outfit, course.
Each person is made of elements of nature. These manifest in physical and mental traits like athletic build, robust gut microbiota, and anxiety. Ayurveda and TCM use the elements system to diagnose wellness. The Magazine found that shoe choice plays a major role in stepping in the right direction to balance and vitality. The trick? Knowing if you are fine or in need a supplement. A Dosha Dressing style supplement, of course.
Personal style extends to books. Certain books keep us engaged for reasons that we might not recognize. Reading for leisure or pleasure has diminished more than deodorant use. That decreases cognitive, analytical, and critical thinking skills needed for survival. Importantly, problem solving requires these functions. Here are a list of books that match brain personality and Dosha Dressing fashion to match.
As the Met Gala approaches, we are reminded that Katy Perry will dress in a ridiculous costume that makes the event a Halloween spectacle. This year’s Fashion is Art theme may play to that more than previous themes. Of course, Dosha Dressing is the epitome of Fashion is Art.
Significantly, women are not trying to be men or adopt a reductive archetype. They do carry menswear- and so-called men’s work- stronger than ever. A common denominator is the gut-brain connection that makes Dosha Dressing our foundation. For our Spring-Summer Issue 10, tip your hat to the Woman Next Door.
In this article, The Magazine provides fifteen outfits for transitioning into Spring. These looks serve dosha nuances without sacrificing style.
The arctic air and temperature permeate mood as much as it does bones. The most sensitive in the bunch, Vata, feels that 10 times more than anyone else. This dosha is described as “cold”. But, how does that translate in science? Their hyperactive sympathetic nervous system means insomnia and goose bumps (sympathicotonia).
Never being able to warm up hurts more than the freezing cold hitting your face. Circulation and thermoregulation rule over Vata during the coldest season.
Wear your best self to the whereabouts that fulfill not the perpetual wish list of a better self. These are the places that satiate the deepest insides that Dom can’t do. And the looks.
A week for Kapha looks like doing little things to get out of big routines. She likes the same old, old same. We’re not letting that happen. That’s brain and body rot.
San Francisco is the ideal city to both remain a leader and tap a softer persona. Pittas, or Type-A executives and leaders, need to loosen concrete minds, leap over fast heart rates with bigger hearts, and use power red when it really matters.
There is no better personality that benefits from a weekly line-up than Type-B. An easygoing and curious nature distracts from realizing ideations. Unfinished business becomes restlessness, anxiety and burnout.
With that said, what was I supposed to wear with these pants to keep the look functional and agreeable without getting boring?
In the endless carousel of trends, something far more interesting is happening in your closet. This is Dosha Dressing: a way of getting dressed that is more refined, more intimate, and infinitely more socially literate than fashion ever gave us credit for.
Fall is an atmosphere. Asking us to reconsider, reframe and regenerate. We have chosen regeneration in its most deliberate form. This issue explores that process through Dosha Dressing, created by Aarti Kuver, PhD.
Our virtual medicine cabinets are bursting open with Ora rings, full body scanners, and more biotic supplements than we can swallow in a longevity lifetime. But, not everyone has a doable co-pay prescription to all of that. Does it really need to be so exorbitant?
Prada has masterfully combined high fashion and environmental stewardship. It is fostering ocean literacy through artful exhibitions and community engagement that speaks to the urgency of protecting marine ecosystems.
This Summer, Dosha Dressing is punctuating the white dress perfectly with a dash of blue. Imagine a rich ocean blue echoing the intensity of Pitta’s deep waters, or a delicate sky blue that speaks to Vata’s free-spirited wanderlust.
Summer is not just a season- it’s a state of mind. But before you surrender to the tyranny of sweat and frizz, consider that Dosha Dressing is borne out of an ancient remedy that has been quietly dictating balance for centuries.
Beyond fashion, the feet hold potent Ayurvedic marma points- gateways to circulation, balance, and vitality. Whether stimulating Kshipra (big toe) for movement, Talahridaya (sole center) for grounding, or Gulpha (ankle) for agility, shoes are not merely chosen- they are prescribed.
Spring love is arriving warm in silk, cashmere and fluff. Red with a splash of vanilla and snuggle of gray bring tridoshic energy to warmer temperatures and extended sunshine.
Creative and profitable expectations are akin to nerves propagating electrical messages in continuous motion. This pressure can crash the nervous system and personal harmony. Unless, one does as Marc Jacobs: recognize how to work the positive and the negative.
In a world where fashion often feels like a performance—one part spectacle, one part self-expression—there is an urgency for a quieter revolution. Definitely not trend-chasing or silhouettes dictated by runways. It is about listening to the body. Not just its shape, but its energy. Its blueprint.
Is a Fashionable $cience droplet not preferable to an influenza infection? This NYE, we take monochromatic looks out for a night on the town. Or maybe don our shiniest attire for a glitzy night in marathoning with Jacques Tati. After all, personal energy, or doshic constitution, stimulates feelings of luxury.
Seasons change, moods transform, so let us revamp our outfits to reflect our seasonal awareness. Pitta needs to cool down her mind and body after a sultry Summer. Vata and Kapha get to embrace these cooler seasons.
Let us prevent soars in cortisol with easy dosha dressing for Summer escapes to the Hamptons.
