A Long and Lean Spring: Light on the Ozempic

Is there anything more Americana than the perfect pair of jeans? Especially heading into our 250 years of existence? Needless to say, jeans are integral to the woman next door. From Cindy C’s Pepsi cut-offs to Brooke Shields’ infamous nothing-in-between pair of Calvin’s, our closets are filled with denims for every moment life offers. Notably, to get the very right pair is like winning the World Cup. That happens every 4 years. The wait for the perfect fitting jean took 20 years.

Long hail Gap for their imperative relaunch of the best jeans ever made for every body. No dieting, extreme exercising, or waif jabbing. Simply slipping into a pair of tridoshic jeans for a feel that’s better than Spring cleaning.

The LLs, as The Magazine belovedly calls it, is a good universal fit for a very simple, possibly controversial, reason. We desire and prefer the ideal of a long and lean body. The Ozempic Era weighs in heavier to this inclination. Through scientific and Ayurvedic explorations, certain body shapes are visually and physically advantageous.

The Social Displacement: Much of the modern psychological pressure regarding body image is essentially an attempt to force endomorphs to mimic ectomorphs. This is a process Ayurveda considers biologically stressful and potentially deviates from Prakriti. Compellingly, it may explain why Ozempic side effects vary.

THE SCIENCE

The preference for a low fat-elongated lines “long and lean" aesthetic is a convergence of biology, cognition, and, surprisingly, socioeconomics. While attractiveness is considered subjective, several data-driven reasons have emerged as to why this specific silhouette remains powerful. Visually, at least.

Figure 2: Same Cloth, Different Cuts.

We are all made from the same cloth. With different cuts. Cindy’s prototypic Pitta structure is prominent in her muscle definition. She has retained a Goldilocks shape (not too this or that) throughout her career. Karlie Kloss and Kate Moss clearly hold the long and lean aesthetic. They are strong Vata energies as evidenced by minimal change to their shape after aging and mothering. Though she looked like a Vata in her Calvin’s, Brooke’s Pitta-Vata mix shows in her current body.

Leanness is a mark of metabolic efficiency, which fits into our hardwired nature to seek fertility and health. Evolutionarily, non-anorexic skinny is appealing. A low waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) tells the world you are healthy enough for baby boomer-ism and they do not need to financially support your chronic illness because you supposedly have none. The “long" part of the aesthetic correlates with high limb-to-torso ratios (LTR). Biomechanically, longer limbs are associated with efficient movement and running. Ancestrally, this translated to better hunting or escaping predators. A defined physique serves as a clear visual map that muscles are functional.

The lean physique is scientifically attractive because it suggests a body that processes energy without pollution. It is a visual proxy for high mitochondrial efficiency. Optimal powerhouse functioning burns fuel (glucose and fat) cleanly. If mitochondrial function is low, Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) and metabolic byproducts lead to weight gain and lethargy.

Like Degas’ ballerinas, society once regarded plumpness as prime figures due to the eliteness of having a Kardashian-sized food pantry. We now champion Rich Bitch connotations. Cheap high-calorie, ultra-processed foods correlate with lean as the new indicator of status. We don’t need sociologists to point out biases, like the Halo Effect, we hold dearly. The average woman is banana-shaped. But we are forever chasing the French girl aesthetic a la Ms. Jane Long-and-Lean Birkin. A lean physique signals a leisurely life with time for exercise and the disposable income to afford high-quality, nutritious whole foods.

Like LLs, Ayurveda doesn’t discriminate against different body shapes (Fig. 2). Each dosha contributes to a healthy aesthetic through specific genetic mechanisms. The Vata Body, or ectomorph, is naturally long and lean with less subcutaneous fat to pad Zendaya-esque collar bones (long factor), and fast metabolism to produce a willowy look (lean factor). Muscular definition, like Cindy Crawford’s athletic frame, is provided by the Pitta element. Though Kapha is the antithesis of the long and lean look because they store fat easily and have broad frames, their high capacity for endurance is the standard for longevity. Like these jeans that last forever- the pictured pairs in Figure 1 are from 2001 and 2026.

Variations in fatty acid transport due to the CD36 gene increases fat storage in endomorphs, or Kapha bodies. Endomorphs malfunction under lean conditions. Notably, ectomorphs, or Vata bodies, with higher cortisol reactivity carry midsection stress fat. The athletic Pitta body, or mesomorph, correlates with high brown adipose tissue (BAT) activity. BAT burns energy to produce heat, mirroring the Ayurvedic concept of heat.

Before we play the blame game on social media influencers and fashion magazines, science and medicine added to the problem of shunning innate shapes. While Ayurveda values all three major types for their unique strengths, medical data rides on the “lean” train. Hello, BMI? Firstly, visceral fat, or Kapha “heaviness”, is seen in the Longevity Circuit as The Angel of Death. Data confirms that it drives pro-inflammatory signals in the form of cytokine production. Secondly, leaner frames, or Vata “lightness”, turns on longevity genes. Thanks to David “Peter Pan” Sinclair, PhD, we have data that supports this and the reason behind the NAD-popping movement. Consuming calorically less activates sirtuins, or “life proteins”. Unfortunately, most health related studies are aimed at the long and lean life. They are not devised to consider doshic configurations.

BOTTOM LINE

Skip pilates, slip into LLs, and confidently move from working to circulating. The Y2K low rise is perfect for all shapes from Tracy Anderson abs to those who wait in hourslong lines for 3000 calorie Crumbl concoctions and high-anxiety nomads. Constructed with a fitted waist, slim hip and thigh, and bootcut cotton, the LL is the Goldilocks of the raver baggy and Kate Moss skinny denim dilemma.
