SCIENCE IS BEAUTY
BY STAFF.
The snow is melting, the mood is thawing, and the jet is fueling. So, where are we going and what are we wearing? Importantly, how are we glowing up our skin for the new seasons ahead? And excursions that await!
This Dosha Dressing takes us on a trip to the best skin tints The Magazine has tested. These give skin personality an extra glint by playing up natural tendencies for pigmentation, inflammation, or congestion.
Of course, pair these skin glow recs with personalized destinations, scarves and long and leans.
“These scarves are an emblem of where we can go (Kapha), where we have been (Pitta), and where we are going (Vata). Don’t dream about visiting every destination. Go there. Making excuses or putting a hold on plans is so not you… anymore. If you have been already, go again and visit a different area, find a different purpose. Don’t do the tourist things. Eat where the residents eat, shop as the locals do, and talk as the community does.”
THE SCIENCE
Skin is divided into dry, oily, and combo. This is because skin thickness, oiliness, and dryness differ according to doshic constitutions- or Vata, Kapha, and Pitta.
These further depend on sebaceous activity and hydration. That means clear skin and wrinkles.
Spring and Summer love a little sun-inflicted color, but we all cannot convince ourselves that bathing in UV rays is that good for us. Hail the invention of skin tints that double as skincare! We chose ones that complement skin specifics.
Serve up the glow with personal style notes. Whether sending a postcard from Lisbon or cruising through your home office, embrace that vibe and yourself with a scarf. Hermes fits distinct personalities like a sailor’s knot. On est bien ici scarf befits over-thinkers (Vata) and couch potatoes (Kapha) because they either are a travel bug or need a nudge. On the other hand, this is the Boardroom Icon’s (Pitta) season to get lit. Le Philateliste du Faubourg defines this poised anchor whose work keeps her globe-trotting.
GLOWY BUT OILY
Skin Personality: dull, oily, uneven and slow-fading dark spots
Travel Style: Comfort
Ayurvedic Trait: Kapha
Figure 1: Slow-Mo Girlies Rush. Take a hike in one of the world's most beloved wonders. The Grand Canyon makes couch potatoes less mushy by increasing their sad baseline cardiovascular activity. Mix up sea blues with bright reds and oranges to spark life into you. Suedes, silks and light cottons keep things moving.
Glowy when healthy, lackluster as your travel plans when disconnected. Bed-Rotting Champions have thick skin (the outer layer or stratum corneum) that congests, which means that though it can be smooth, it has a slow turnover. Thanks to substantial oil production, loaded moisturizing layers are unnecessary. But, uneven skin tone and deep hyperpigmented macules take forever to clear. Cover it up with Good Weather Skin’s tinted SPF 35. It is light and hydrating with a fairly sheer glow.
“Higher baseline levels of sebum lipid secretion (scalene, triglycerides) and lower baseline levels of systemic metabolic turnover means high sebum lipids and sluggish keratinocyte (skin cell) turnover. A thick stratum corneum provides natural protection against UV-induced skin damage so Kapha skin types rarely burn, but summer humidity overproduces sebum. This traps cell debris, which gives localized low grade follicular inflammation. The dead heavily pigmented surface cells do not shed (desquamate) efficiently. Light products, exfoliate, and steam.”
Coast to unknown places in the orange and yellow silk on est bien ici scarf. The vibrant, light-reflecting sheen of silk stimulates the senses, cutting through inertia. Silk also helps dry ideas because it absorbs around 30% of its weight in moisture minus the dampness. Wrap it around your ponytail and let it pull you into the breeze.
Layer bright and pastel polos that are textured in light fabrics (Fig. 1). A suede purse in a beige is light enough without disrupting your vibe, a sleeveless suede vest (Miu Miu) is airy, light blue kitten heels (Pierre Hardy) carry you out and don’t let you down.
Comfy Cathy, get carried away by the winds…
The arid crisp air of Grand Canyon edges out fluid retention and respiratory congestion. Slow-mo girlies are forced to wake up their sluggish metabolism by facing its physically demanding topography. Cheers to a cardiovascularly exerting and exhilarating getaway.

HIGH AND DRY
Skin Personality: dry, paper-thin, gray-brown sun patches (freckles vibe)
Travel Style: Wander
Ayurvedic Trait: Vata
Figure 2: Side-Questing Lover. Sit still in flats, greens, and silks. Accordion bags order chaos. A thick radiating balm adds color, moisture, and life to dehydrated skin.
Give some love to this dehydrated aesthetic with a creamy glow. Vata has the thinnest skin so it ages early (fine lines). It is thirsty for heavy sesame and almond oils, which sink into the deepest layers of the dermis. Minimal hydration and lipid barrier are insufficient to block Spring and Summer’s intense UV rays. Save yourself from TEWL-triggered micro-wrinkling with a thick creamy glow reviver. RMS Beauty’s Master Radiance Base works wonderfully to add major glow hydration and not conceal signature freckles. Layer balm over an SPF like Tatcha’s Silk Sunscreen SPF 50.
“The limited expression of water transport proteins aquaporins (AQP3) prompts transepidermal water loss (TEWL). Oxidative stress disrupts collagen faster because of that lack of moisture. Micro-wrinkles and melasma manifest instead of Farrah Fawcett tans.”
A green on est bien ici scarf in a polished french knot incorporates a beached nimbus of nature (Fig. 2). It also evokes the connection of green plants reaching to the sky for sunlight. Utterly airy Vata. Mint green pointy flats (Chanel) sharpen direction. A suede accordion purse (Phoebe Philo) provides order for the many things you like picking up and adding to your life throughout your day. Layer a cream or bone men’s t-shirt under a slim green soft cardigan and keep a men’s bomber member’s only style jacket near by.
For restive sorts, destinations away from city centers are real vacations…
Take this side-quest party to Lisbon, ideally in late May or June. Small towns rather than the chaotic centers prevent the sensory overstimulation (noise and crowds) that triggers anxiety. You’ll be met with consistent ambient warmth and moderate coastal humidity, not with dehydrating heat. This vacation spot stabilizes highly variable autonomic nervous systems, promoting better sleep and digestion. Your circadian rhythms and gut-brain axis will thank you.
“Vata types possess an inherently highly variable reticular activating system (RAS), making them prone to sleep disruptions, anxiety, and overstimulation. So, no island hopping in Ibiza because jet lag and constant movement disrupt master circadian pacemakers (suprachiasmatic nuclei). That exacerbates Vata’s baseline tendency toward insomnia and irregular digestion.”

HOT NOT STIFLED
Skin Personality: fiery red sunburns, pink-red acne scars, sunspots
Travel Style: Luxury
Ayurvedic Trait: Pitta
Figure 3: Main Character Softwear Software. Stamp collecting is a low-stress, and methodical hobby competitive and hyper-efficient personalities. Even if its not your thing, the scarf is a reminder of that energy. Don’t pack the annual employee evaluations. Do pack SPF and the ultimate glow potion.
Higher levels of tyrosinase activity means stowing SPF 50, like Tatcha Silk Sunscreen, in your purse, carry-on, and checked Luis Vuitton trunk. It covers a bit of signature hyperpigmentation and distinctive flushing. Skin inflames in the heat (thermal stress) because of a massive release of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Top off with a bit of glimmer like Chanel’s Highlighting Fluid that is light enough to not clog problem areas.
“Tyrosinase, the enzyme responsible for producing melanin, is produced in greater quantities in Pitta. The heat and sun exacerbate this underlying over-activity. Heat stress releases interleukins 1⍺, 6, and TNF⍺, which stimulate melanocytes using the MC1R receptor. Acute post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), rapid sunspot formation, and sunburn result.”
Red isn’t just for your facial flare-ups and temper. Summer is your season, so add a bit of flair. The rouge-bordered Le Philateliste du Faubourg scarf and delicate real red ribboned ballet flats (Bode) float you into accepting an unserious Summer (Fig. 3) Silk has a naturally cool tactile temperature especially when worn loosely. Toss Le Philateliste du Faubourg over in a cowl style to instill Fluid Fridays. Scale back the perfection meter by layering a soft cream t-shirt under a beige polo. Add a heavy suede jacket for grounding weight. A bowler bag (Miu Miu) in beige leather softens edges.
“Highly driven phenotypes have elevated stress-induced inflammatory pathways due to deep focusing. Organizing hobbies remove the element of competition. Stamp collecting activates the brain’s ventral attention network (VAN) and dampens the hyper-arousal of the sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight). The VAN acts like a circuit breaker for magnified concentration, adding a bit of scatter-brain, or Vata energy.”
Leave the employee evaluations, take the sunscreen…
This corporate siren needs to mitigate heat stress and systemic inflammation by hopping over to Brittany. Down-regulate elevated metabolic heat in its fresh, cool water bodies.
